Overview


Franklin Templeton Investments presence in Malaysia started in 1987 where the Templeton Emerging Markets group has been investing in the country since. In 2009, the company established the Franklin Templeton Asset Management (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“FTAM”). On 6 January 2010, the Securities Commission, Malaysia granted the license to Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. (“FTGSC”) to carry on the regulated activity of Islamic fund management in Malaysia.

FTGSC manages several Shariah investment mandates and it also offers one retail Sukuk fund (the "Fund"), which was launched in Malaysia on 18 November 2015.

Both FTAM and FTGSC are wholly owned subsidiaries of Franklin Resources, Inc. and it currently has a team of equity, fixed income and Sukuk investment professionals located in Kuala Lumpur that manage assets for the local investors across a wide range of strategies; conventional & Shariah as well as global & domestic strategies in different asset classes; equity, balanced, fixed income and Sukuk. Since its establishment in Malaysia in 2009, it has received over 20 investment awards from local and international agencies.

  • Chief Executive Officer - Nor Hanifah binti Hashim

    Nor Hanifah Hashim, Chief Executive Officer, has over 23 years of experience in the financial industry including 18 years with CIMB Banking Group. Hanifah’s role as the Chief Executive Officer of Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. (“FTGSC”) involve overseeing the implementation of business strategy of the company, plan and assist with the strategies and activities to increase asset under management, forge strong relationship with clients and potential clients, regulators, industry players and other business functions within FTI as well as to further build the profile and branding of the company in Malaysia.

    Hanifah joined FTGSC in 2011 as the Head of Malaysia fixed income and sukuk. She oversees fixed income in Malaysia, including conventional fixed income and domestic Sukuk strategies. She continues to manage domestic Sukuk funds and develops investment policies for the Malaysian market while working closely with the Franklin Templeton Fixed Income team in the Middle East on global Sukuk mandates and supports Franklin Templeton's global fixed income capabilities.

    Prior to joining Franklin Templeton Investments, Ms. Hashim held the position of Executive Vice President - Head of fixed income, CIMB - Principal Asset Management Berhad, and before that Senior Vice President and Head of fixed income services in the treasury department of CIMB Investment Bank.

    Ms. Hashim holds a B.S. in economics and international relations from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a national member of Financial Market Association - Malaysia and obtained her Capital Markets Services Representative License (CMSRL) in 2004.

  • Prishanti Sunderam joined Franklin Templeton in April 2019 as the Compliance Manager, overseeing compliance related matters for Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. (FTGSC). Prishanti has over 10 years of experience functioning within the capital markets services industry in Malaysia, focusing on unit trusts and funds management compliance.

    Prior to joining Franklin Templeton, she was with AmFunds Management Berhad as Compliance - Vice President managing regulatory compliance matters for the Funds Management Division. Prishanti holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from University of London. She also holds ICA International Diploma in Anti Money Laundering and Regulatory Compliance from University of Manchester.

  • Manager of Marketing Communications – Jean Soong

    Jean joined Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. in April 2017 as the Marketing Communications Manager for the office in Malaysia. She brings with her more than 10 years of experience from the unit trust and wealth management industry. Her main focus in Franklin Templeton is formulating and executing marketing communications strategies for both the retail and institutional target markets to support the growth of the company’s business.

    Jean previously served as Communications Manager at AmFunds Management Berhad where she supported all branding, marketing and public relations activities. Prior to that, she was AVP, Wealth Management Marketing, at OCBC Bank (Malaysia) where she oversaw end-to-end marketing responsibilities for Wealth Management products inclusive of Deposits, Bancassurance, Structured Investment, Unit Trusts and Retail Bonds, and developed campaigns to drive product activation as well as volume penetration of Wealth Management Products within customer base.

    Jean holds a Bachelor degree in Business Information Systems (BIS) from Multimedia University Malaysia.

Investment Committee

The Investment Committee formulates, establishes and implements investment strategies and policies. The Investment Committee will continually review and monitor the success of these strategies and policies as well as ensure investment guidelines and regulations are complied with. The Investment Committee will meet at least once every quarter.

  • Non-independent member - Sandeep Singh

    Sandeep Singh is responsible for overseeing the leadership and development of Franklin Templeton's retail and institutional businesses in the Central Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA) region, home to some of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds and retail market opportunities, both emerging and established.

    Additionally, Mr. Singh is also responsible for leading the firm's Shariah business development efforts and initiatives globally.

    Mr. Singh was previously the country head of Malaysia responsible for executing the firm's business strategy and oversaw the sales and marketing of all products there.

    Mr. Singh joined Franklin Templeton Investments in 1998 as the regional sales manager of Franklin Templeton Asset Management (India) Private Limited in Kolkata, India. Mr. Singh was then promoted to the role of senior vice president and national sales director based in Mumbai, responsible for managing both retail and institutional business spread across 33 offices in India.

    Prior to joining Franklin Templeton, Mr. Singh worked as senior manager for marketing with Cholamandalam Cazenove AMC Ltd in Chennai, India. With over 20 years of experience in the asset management industry, Mr. Singh has a proven track-record of working in a start-up environment.

    Mr. Singh graduated with a bachelor of engineering (mechanical) from the Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, India, and holds an M.B.A. from The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. He is also a Certified Financial Planner.

  • Non-independent member – Avinash Satwalekar

    Avinash Satwalekar is the Country Head of Malaysia and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Franklin Templeton Asset Management (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. and is responsible for leading the firm's retail and institutional distribution efforts across Malaysia. Aside from his responsibilities in Malaysia, Mr. Satwalekar continues to serve as Chairman of Vietcombank Fund Management (VCBF), a joint venture between Franklin Templeton and Vietcombank in Vietnam.

    Mr. Satwalekar was previously the CEO and CIO for VCBF based in Ho Chi Minh City. He oversaw the combined business and investment activities of the group and under his leadership, Franklin Templeton was one of the first asset managers to launch an open-ended retail fund in Vietnam in 2013. Prior to his role in Vietnam, Mr. Satwalekar was a vice president, portfolio manager and research analyst for Franklin Portfolio Advisors (FPA), a division of FTPA. He was a member of the Franklin Small Cap Growth portfolio management team and was the lead manager for the private small cap accounts for FPA. Before that, Mr. Satwalekar was a vice president and research analyst for Franklin Equity Group. He specialized in research analysis of the computer software industries and IT service companies.

    Mr. Satwalekar joined Franklin Templeton in 1996 as a management trainee working on Franklin Convertible Securities Fund from March 1997 to June 1998. Prior to Franklin, he worked for DSP Merrill Lynch in the Debt Origination Group.

    Mr. Satwalekar received a bachelor of commerce from the University of Bombay, India and an M.B.A. in finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of San Francisco (CFASF).

  • Non-independent member - Nor Hanifah binti Hashim

Ms. Hashim joined FTGSC in 2011 as the Head of Malaysia fixed income and sukuk. She oversees fixed income in Malaysia, including conventional fixed income and domestic sukuk strategies. She continues to manage domestic sukuk funds and develops investment policies for the Malaysian market while working closely with the Franklin Templeton Fixed Income team in the Middle East on global sukuk mandates and supports Franklin Templeton's global fixed income capabilities.

  • Independent member - Wan Hanisah binti Wan Ibrahim

    Wan Hanisah was appointed as a director of the Manager on 11 March 2014. She started her career with BNM in 1982 and she has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry. She graduated with masters in Economics from the University of Malaya and a degree in analytical economics at the University of Malaya under the BNM’s scholarship.

    In 1993, Ms. Hanisah was assigned to the Bank Negara Malaysia’s London representative office where she, subsequently, was appointed as the Chief Representative in that representative office in 1996. During the Asian financial and economic crisis in 1997, she was involved in managing the international reserves as well as money market operations of BNM, being the Deputy Director of the Treasury Department in BNM Head Office.

    Ms. Hanisah has held high positions in various departments throughout her career in BNM. She was a director of the international department, director of the treasury department and director of the foreign exchange administration department. She was one of the representatives who represented Malaysia in the negotiation of Japan-Malaysia Economic Partnership and represented BNM in the government cash flow committee. She spearheaded the establishment of BURSA SUQ AL SILA in Bursa Malaysia, the first exchange traded platform using Islamic principles and Shariah-compliance operations of Islamic money market in Malaysia for funding, origination as well as hedging (in ringgit and foreign currency). She was also involved in the liberalization of ringgit as a settlement currency traded on China foreign exchange trading system (“CFETS”) for settlement of goods and services.

    In 2011, Ms. Hanisah was appointed as a director of LINK and regional offices department, a new department within BNM, where she is responsible for Malaysia’s northern and southern region, and focuses on new economic corridors and new areas of growth in the country. She is also a member of the national investment committee which is co-chaired by the MITI Minister and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Idris Jala. The committee discusses the investment strategy of the country and the chairman reports to the National Economic Council chaired by the Prime Minister.

  • Independent member - Dr. Chak Choy Sim

    Dr. Chak Choy Sim joined Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. as an independent director on 25 June 2014. She is a freelance researcher with focus on areas relating to financial governance. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Malaya, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from the Securities Institute of Australia, Sydney, Australia. She has a Master in Business Management from Asian Institute of Management in Manila, and a Bachelor of Science with Education from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

    Dr. Chak's work experience included a stint as an Audit Trainee at Coopers & Lybrand, employments with the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), Asian and Pacific Development Centre (APDC), Telekom Malaysia, and a communications company before joining the Economics Research Department of the Securities Commission (SC) in 1993. While at the SC, Dr Chak was granted a 6-month sabbatical with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation in Vienna and returned to join the SC’s Regulations & Law Reform Department.

    Dr. Chak left the SC as a Manager in the Product Development Department and joined Commerce International Merchant Bankers Bhd (CIMB) in the Risk Management Unit in December 1999. Thereafter, Dr. Chak was with the Employees Provident Fund from July 2003 until she retired in July 2005 and became a freelance researcher.

Franklin Templeton GSC Asset Management Sdn. Bhd. (“FTGSC”) outsources some of its services to external parties such as the following:

Compliance Function

FTGSC appointed Franklin Templeton Asset Management (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“FTAM”) to undertake the compliance function on its behalf. FTAM is part of the Franklin Templeton Investments group of companies and was set up in Malaysia to expand its footprint in South East Asia under the foreign fund management license issued under the Malaysian Special Scheme. FTAM is a holder of the Capital Markets Services License for fund management since March 2009.

Fund Valuation and Fund Accounting Functions

Deutsche Trustees Malaysia Berhad (“DTMB”) has been appointed to carry out the fund accounting and valuation services for the funds. DTMB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the parent organisation, Deutsche Bank Aktiengesellschaft. DTMB was incorporated in Malaysia on 22 February 2007 and commenced business in May 2007.

DTMB is part of Deutsche Bank’s Securities Services, which provides trustee and fund accounting and valuation services. DTMB expanded its product offering to include fund accounting and valuation services in 2018.

Its duties include, amongst others, performing valuation of the investments held by the Funds and maintaining financial accounting records of portfolios including all transactions data, records and investment ledgers.

Registrar and Transfer Agency Functions

FTGSC appointed Karvy Computershare (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“Karvy”) as the registrar and transfer agent. Karvy was incorporated in Malaysia on 8 March 2016. It is registered as a company under the Companies Act 1965, with its business address at Suite 16.01, Level 16, Menara IMC, 8 Jalan Sultan Ismail, 50250 Kuala Lumpur. The roles and duties of Karvy as the registrar and transfer agent include maintaining the register of Unit Holder, transaction processing, reconciliation and preparing relevant communication to investors.

Back Office and Internal Audit Functions

FTGSC appointed Franklin Templeton Companies, LLC (“FTCLLC”), a Delaware Limited Liability Company with a primary place of business in San Mateo, California, USA, to undertake various back office and internal audit functions on its behalf. FTCLLC is part of a combined group of companies, with a common parent corporation, Franklin Resources, Inc., which is collectively known as Franklin Templeton Investments. FTCLLC is a service company responsible for the management of certain intercompany services and charges that may occur from time to time between the affiliated companies within Franklin Templeton Investments.

Corporate Information of the Shariah Advisor

Amanie Advisors Sdn Bhd (''Amanie'') is a Shariah advisory, consultancy, training and research and development boutique for institutional and corporate clientele focusing on Islamic financial services. Amanie is a registered Shariah advisory company for Islamic unit trust with the SC. It has been established with the aim of addressing the global needs for experts' and Shariah scholars' pro-active input. This will ultimately allow the players in the industry to manage and achieve their business and financial goals in accordance with the Shariah Principles. Amanie also focuses on organizational aspect of the development of human capital in Islamic finance worldwide through providing updated quality learning embracing both local and global issues on Islamic financial products and services.

The company is led by Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar and teamed by an active and established panel of consultants covering every aspect related to the Islamic banking and finance industry both in Malaysia and the global market. Currently the team comprises of eight (8) full-time consultants who represent dynamic and experienced professionals with a mixture of corporate finance, accounting, product development, Shariah law and education.

Amanie meets every quarter to address Shariah advisory matters pertaining to our Shariah funds. Since 2005, Amanie has acquired fourteen (14) years of experience in the advisory role of unit trusts and as at 31 May 2019 there are more than 170 funds which Amanie acts as Shariah adviser.

  • Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Amanie Group. One of its flagship companies namely Amanie Advisors, is operating in few cities globally. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at the Central Bank of Malaysia, the Securities Commission of Malaysia, Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM), the Labuan Financial Services Authority and the First Abu Dhabi Bank.

    Prior to this, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. He received his first degree in Shariah from University of Kuwait in 1988 and obtained his PhD from University of St.  Andrews, United Kingdom in 1993. In 2002, he completed his external Bachelor of Jurisprudence at University of Malaya.

  • Suhaida Mahpot is the Chief Executive Officer for Amanie Advisors in Kuala Lumpur office. She joined Amanie in 2008 and was amongst the pioneers in the company. She is a specialist in sukuk advisory and has been partnering with Datuk Dr Mohd Daud Bakar for the last 10 years to advise numerous sukuk locally and internationally.

    Apart from sukuk advisory, her primarily focus is on Shariah governance, structuring, enhancement and conversion exercises, establishment of Islamic financial entities as well as development of Islamic products. She holds a Bachelor of Economics (Islamic Economic & Finance) from International Islamic University Malaysia, and currently pursuing MSc in Islamic Finance with INCEIF.

  • Benjamin is a Director of Amanie Advisors based in Leeds, United Kingdom and is responsible for providing various Shariah advisory and consultation services to clients across the globe.

    Prior to joining Amanie Advisors, he worked with Kuwait Finance House Research Ltd. as a Manager in the Islamic Capital Markets department. He completed various research and advisory/consultancy projects with various global Islamic finance institutions and partners.
